SLIDENIGHT Vol. V
SlideNight returns: we’re back for the opening of the fall gallery season! SlideNight is a quarterly salon where artists and the community gather for an exciting evening of lens-based art. On Thursday, September 19th, we are back for our fifth instalment. Doors open at 7 p.m. and admission is $25. Due to overwhelming demand, we have moved the event next door from Gallery 881 to a bigger venue where we are activating 879 East Hastings. Following the presentations, please join us for a licensed after party at Gallery 881 (admission to the after party is free)!
COST:
$25 / $30 at the door
While we may have limited tickets available at the door, these would be limited and offered on a first come, first served basis.

SLIDENIGHT V
For SlideNight V, we are excited to plunge into the immersive worlds of documentary and street photography as they intersect with contemporary art. These disciplines have exploded in the last decade with the advent of smartphones, an almost second coming of the genres since the 35mm camera allowed for quickness and portability. Now, the casual photographer is able to document their world at almost any moment. Our evening will showcase both old masters and newer stars. We are so thrilled with this tremendously talented and diverse group of documentary photographers, and we hope you will join us for what promises to be another exciting evening of outstanding lens-based art.

Alex Waterhouse-Hayward

My birth in a Buenos Aires hospital was recorded with a burst of a photographer's magnesium flash in 1942. I knew then that one day I would become a photographer.
I taught algebra and ancient and medieval history in a Mexico City high school until 1975 when I moved to Vancouver with my Canadian wife Rosemary and two Mexican-born daughters.
I started as a stills photographer shooting CBC drama and variety shows. But magazines were my real love. Since the late 70s I have shot for almost every magazine and newspaper in Canada, Time, New York Times, Vanity Fair, Stern, the Guardian, Globe & Mail and many more. In Vancouver I shoot regularly for the arts section of the Georgia Straight weekly, for annual reports, campaign posters for both the Federal and Provincial NDP, etc. In 2001 Canada Post issued four rose stamps that I photographed. I am also a gardener.
13 years ago I started exhibiting my fine arts photography and I have shown at the Simon Patrich Gallery, the Exposure Gallery and the Presentation House. I frequently contribute photography essays for online arts magazines like Vancouver's Ripe Magazine, the Tyee and Montreal's Arts and Opinion.
For 13 years I taught photography for the Outreach Program of Emily Carr and I currently teach at Focal Point. I am doing collaborative work with Vancouver based Argentine painters Nora Patrich and Juan Manuel Sanchez.
